What is Strength?

At ADP’s 9/11 Remembrance Event, we asked everyone to write down “what strength is” to them on slips of paper. Here are a few of the responses from Fort Hays State University students, faculty and Hays community.

“STRENGTH TO ME, IS STANDING ALONE IN A CROWD, FOR SOMETHING THAT IS RIGHT.”

“STRENGTH TO ME IS BEING FEARLESS. IT DOESN’T MEAN HAVING NO FEAR. IT MEANS, YOU NEVER GIVE INTO FEAR.”

“STRENGTH IS STANDING UP FOR WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN, NO MATTER WHAT.”

“STRENGTH IS STANDING STRONG IN THE FACE OF ADVERSITY.”

“STRENGTH IS KEEPING A CLEAR MIND AND BELIEF IN YOURSELF AND OTHERS TO OVERCOME ADVERSITY AND CHANGE. WHEN YOU’RE STRONG, YOU OVERCOME YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES AND CONTINUE TO PUSH FORWARD.”

“STRENGTH IS MERELY STANDING UP AGAIN.”

“STRENGTH IS LETTING YOURSELF BE BROKEN.”

“STRENGTH MEANS CARRYING ON WITH DIGNITY AND RESOLVE, IN SPITE OF THE LEVEL OF CHALLENGE, OR POWER OF OPPOSING FORCES.”
STRENGTH IS UNITY IN TIMES OF ADVERSITY.”

“STRENGTH IS DEFENDING YOUR CONVICTIONS.”

“STRENGTH IS PEOPLE COMING TOGETHER.”

“STRENGTH MEANS GETTING UP EVERYDAY, NO MATTER HOW DIFFICULT.”

“STRENGTH  IS TO WITHSTAND, NOT TO FALTER.”

“STRENGTH MEANS COURAGE AND FAITH IN TIMES OF UNSPEAKABLE HARDSHIP.”

ADP is thrilled to have Benjamin Franklin on our campus!

ADP and Forsyth Library are excited to continue the Ben Franklin Papers day today, September 19 2011. Over 200 Ellis County fifth graders are enjoying their day on the FHSU campus, learning about the life and contributions of Benjamin Franklin and taking a look at FHSU’s own exciting piece of history: two authentic letters, handwritten by Ben Franklin himself! The students will enjoy a day full of history and fun as they travel from station to station in Forsyth Library. Each learning station has been created with the help of Sue Boldra’s FHSU Teacher Education students as a fun, hands-on way to learn about the importance of these historic documents and Ben Franklin himself. In fact, Benjamin Franklin himself will be dropping in during the day to speak to the kids and get them excited for this unique opportunity! Stay tuned for updates about this event!

Welcome to the American Democracy Project of Fort Hays State University!

The American Democracy Project is excited to present our new and improved program this year! This blog is just the beginning–we are working on ways to make it more exciting so please bear with us while we do this!

ADP has many exciting events this year. We had our first Times Talk today, September 14th and it was a great success! We hope you will join us for our upcoming events:

Wednesday, September 14 and Tuesday, September 20: Interest Meeting for the American Democracy Project Club

Any students who wish to be involved in the new ADP Club on campus are invited to join us for an information meeting. This club is non partisan and is not departmental, which means that any student with any major is invited to join. The meeting on September 14th is as 4:45 PM and the meeting on September 20th will be at 3:00 PM, both in the Nita-Landrum Lounge in Custer Hall. Students need only attend ONE of these meetings. The reason for both dates is so we can establish a good meeting day and time that will work for everyone this year.

Friday, September 16: Constitution Day

Visit the ADP Constitution Day table in Memorial Union for voter registration information and for your free copy of the United States Constitution!

Monday, September 19: Ben Franklin Papers and Talking Democracy

ADP has brought back our beloved Ben Franklin Papers program. We are thrilled to invite area fifth grade students to come to FHSU and learn about our nation’s history and see the authentic letters written by Benjamin Franklin himself, donated by a friend of FHSU several years ago.
Carolyn Campbell, Student director of ADP, and Curt Brungardt, director of the FHSU Center for Civic Leadership, will appear on Talking Democracy on the FHSU TV station KFHS at 5:00 PM on Monday.

Wednesday, September 28: Times Talk with John Heinrichs and Kristin Tardif

John Heinrichs and Kristin Tardif will be giving presentations about global climate change and the human water footprint. The presentation is from 12:30-1:30 PM and free lunch will be provided for the first 20 guests!
